USA hockey team shocks Canada

Yes, the costume  mountie hat above is a lot classier than the silly red, white and blue topper the American is wearing.

But what matters is the final score: USA 5, Canada 3.

Magnificent.

As I’ve noted before, I’m a big fan of Martin Brodeur. But he had an off night tonight against the Americans, letting in a first-minute goal and three more. To add to Canada’s frustrating loss, Team USA slipped in an open-net goal after Brodeur had skated off as the Canadians desperately tried to take the game into overtime.

Of this night, Ryan Miller will always be able to note proudly that he outplayed one of hockey’s legendary goalies. And he added his own chapter to the legends of American Olympic hockey.

  1. A great day for USA Hockey. I still have the S.I. issue with the triumphant American team on the cover winning the Gold Medal in 1980. It’s especially nice beating Team Canada.

  2. Of course, nothing could ever compare to 1980 in Lake Placid, but I like this version of Team USA.

Admittedly, I don’t know much about hockey. None of the names on Team USA are instantly recognizable to me, whereas I’ve definitely heard of Patrice Bergeron, Martin Brodeur, Sidney Crosby and Joe Thornton (although I’m not sure if two of those are because I live in Boston).

How would you say the pros on this USA team compare to those on Canada’s?

  3. Bill: indeed, it’s sweet to beat the country most associated with hockey.

CS: I think the Canadian team is more loaded with NHL talent than the Americans. In fact, as the teams stepped onto the ice, I thought the balance was too heavily in Canada’s favor. Then Team USA scored in the first minute, and I started believing.

The Americans have a lot of quality pros – Rafalaski, Langenbrunner, Miller, Drury – but they’re not quite in the same echelon overall as the Canadians, such as those you named.
