Matt Garza entered his named in the record books at Cooperstown as he threw a no-hitter against the Detroit Tigers tonight. In the old days, I’d have been lucky to catch the game late at night on the radio if the right stations with the right wattage and the right atmospherics were broadcasting it.
But this evening the first inkling I had to tune in was from Twitter, where I learned that there were dueling no-hitters going into the sixth inning. The Rays would break up the no-no attempt by Detroit’s Max Scherzer and surge to a 4-0 lead on Matt Joyce grand slam. Garza, shown above in a game earlier in the season, kept his hitless game going.
About the seventh inning I logged onto the Tigers’ broadcast from the MLB At Bat app on my iPhone. Minus a few interruptions here and there, I was able to listen to the rest of the game and Garza’s triumphant 9th inning on the phone.
One of the great aspects of life in the 21st Century is that technology aids and abets the baseball fan. For that, we Americans should be forever grateful.

  1. Once in a while, WordPress goes on the blink and removes paragraph breaks from my posts. I could take the time to change the code, but I’m going to let this one go.
