The Yankees’ evil empire keeps expanding

A few years back my younger son and I marveled at the awesome display of power Lance Berkman put on at the home run derby during the All-Star break.

Now the longtime Houston Astros slugger is wearing pinstripes for the Evil Empire that is the New York Yankees. The Bronx Bombers also picked up rising star Austin Kearns from the Indians.

The rich just keep getting richer, don’t they?

  1. I think fans who don’t like the Yankees forget that baseball is a business. To be successful in this business you need to win. Winning equals profits. The addition of Berkman gives the Yank’s a threat at the DH position. With the Ray’s on their heels, New York needs a player like Berkman to continue to win. No one seems to complain when Philly got Oswalt.

  2. Well, Berkman was a nice pick-up. He’ll end up being the player the Yanks thought they were getting with Nick Johnson. But Kearns is a 30-year old, semi-failed prospect with a career OPS of .779 in parts of nine seasons. Nothing to get too excited about.
But yes, the rich always get richer. It’s how they got rich in the first place. Bill

  3. I’m not sure about Kearns, but that is what it is. You have to spend money to make money. I still think the AL East is going to come down to the wire between New York and Tampa Bay. It should be fun to watch. What’s sad is the Rays payroll is over $130 million less than New York’s.

  4. Vince: Yep, it should be an exciting race. And you’re right on about the gap between the Yankee’s and KC payroll. Guess it’s always been that way. Thanks very much for the comments.
